Donor Spotlight: Q&A With Paul Baker

How did you become involved with BGCS?
I had the pleasure of attending the Fall Food and Wine Event with my wife, Denise. We really enjoyed reconnecting with several members of the Board of Governors, many of whom I’ve known since our time serving together in the Scottsdale Active 20/30 organization. As our only daughter, Rachel, was heading off to college, it felt like the right time to get more involved in the community again and help raise funds for the children we serve.

What motivates you to support BGCS?
First, it’s the kids and their stories, but second, it’s also the stories we hear from the parents. For many going through tough times in life, the safe haven that BGCS provides is a critical piece of stability in their lives.

Of the programs and services your gifts support, which are most important to you?
For me, it’s our sports programs. Basketball was everything for me as a kid. I played and served as captain for successful teams in both High School and College. The teamwork, effort, communication, and competitive nature have all stayed with me through my career and life in general. I know how it can shape young people’s lives.

What are you most excited about as you look to the future of the organization?
Partnership with SUSD on our new branch at Tonalea Middle School is inspiring. We are on schedule to have our initial Grand Opening just as my term as Board Chair comes to an end. I am also excited about the quality of board members we have been able to assemble. This group comprises many successful and passionate individuals who will lead the organization for years to come.
