Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale Hosts 2nd Annual Spelling Bee

On April 28th, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale hosted its 2nd Annual Spelling Bee at the Virginia G. Piper Branch where more than 50 youth and teen members participated. Spelling Bee contestants came from the Virginia G. Piper, Thunderbirds, Vestar, Hartley & Ruth Barker, Lehi, Red Mountain, and Mary Ellen & Robert McKee Branches.

Each branch hosted its own personal spelling bee during the weeks leading up to the event, which was split into four different age groups: 6-9, 10-12, 13-15, and 16-18. The branches sent their top three spellers from each age group to compete in the organizational bee. Parents, guardians, and family members came to support their kids.

The age groups were divided into various areas where participants’ family members joined to watch them compete. Administrative and full-time Club staff members served as judges.

The winners included Travis from the Mary Ellen & Robert McKee Branch in the 6-9 division, Sawyer from the Virginia G. Piper Branch in the 10-12 division, Hansika from the Virginia G. Piper Branch in the 13-15 division, and Yvonne from Thunderbirds Branch in the 16-18 division. Every child that made it to the organizational bee last week won a finalist medal, and the four first-place winners received a trophy.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale is thrilled to see so many youth and teen members actively engaged in learning and competing in the 2nd Annual Spelling Bee. The Spelling Bee is one of many program event opportunities for youth and teens to develop academic and leadership skills while building a sense of community and belonging.
